Bluetooth is a radio or wireless technology designed for short range data communications in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band. The frequency range is from 2.402Ghz to 2.480Ghz, with the available frequency spectrum being broken up into 79 x 1Mhz wide bands.
Bluetooth was designed by Ericsson as a short range wireless connectivity solution and is used to build Personal Area Networks, or PANs as they are known so that devices in close proximity can pass information. Typical examples being a mobile phone downloading data to a Personal Computer or a mobile phone earpiece communicating with the phone itself. (more…)

Personal Area Network.
Using wireless networking with your personal gadgets is often called PAN, which stands for Personal Area Network. The idea is that, in the future, we’ll all have laptop computers with their batteries charged and no more need to connect any wires to them at all — you just place your Bluetooth device near the computer, and the computer sees it and can use it straightaway. Several large and well-known companies developed Bluetooth as an industry standard. The standard was introduced in order to specify how hand held devices, computers and other peripherals would communicate with one another without the need for cables. It uses short distance radio signals in order to generate communication between one device and another in close proximity. It is already widely used around the world in particular in bluetooth headsets, used for speaking on your cell phone when driving. However, data can be passed between any bluetooth devices within range.

There are both simple and sophisticated ways to protect cell phones from attackers in the U.S. Since phones with Bluetooth connections and data capabilities are the main targets of malware, it is generally the Smartphone that must be secured against vulnerabilities. Cell-phone threats are primarily spread in three ways, Internet downloads, Bluetooth wireless connections, and multimedia messaging service (MMS) .
Many protections are built into devices, such as allowing users to space a strong, five-digit PIN code for Bluetooth devices so that access is harder to crack, and most digital phones have encryption capabilities, which lop the chance of someone latching onto a conversation.
